McGeary's
About This Spot
Step inside McGeary’s, and you’re immediately wrapped in the warmth of an Irish pub that feels like a neighborhood gathering spot with a rhythm all its own. Tucked at 4 Clinton Square in Albany, this place hums with a well-balanced blend of spirited energy and familiar comfort, especially as folks filter in before and after shows at the nearby Palace Theater. The pace here invites you to take a breath, settle in, and soak up the low-lit atmosphere where the clink of glasses and soft murmur of conversations create a cozy, welcoming backdrop.
This isn’t a place aiming for polished fine dining but rather one that treasures approachable food and drinks served with a genuine smile. The menu reflects that spirit through its hearty, satisfying eats — from sliders and pub-style wings that pair perfectly with a well-poured pint, to comforting plates like bangers and mash or the classic corned beef sandwich. There’s an easy joy in sharing Celtic nachos or savoring a Mushroom Burger that feels thoughtfully made without fuss. It all feels geared toward grounding you in a sense of belonging, whether you’re winding down from the day or gearing up for a weekend night.
The staff here move with an effortless grace that speaks to their familiarity with the crowd — they navigate packed nights without losing their calm or warmth, which only adds to the place’s inviting character. You get the impression this is a spot where locals and visitors alike are treated as friends, and where the menu, drinks, and steady soundtrack of good company all come together to create those small, human moments that stay with you long after you leave.

Well worth the visit. If you want to feel like you are a local and being treated as such, definitely go. I enjoyed it and the drinks were pretty damn good

This place gets PACKED when there are shows next door. Food is nothing special but decent and when crowded, it can take a while. Service however is amazing. For the amount of patrons during show nights, these workers are a well oiled machine who maintain their composure under pressure with humor and a smile. They should be recognized for their abilities to juggle the amount of people asking for drinks, food, ketchup, etc. thanks for another good time pre-concert!

This is my 120 th review. I have driven or walked by 275 dining places on 2 continents. I have visited about 175 establishments. Anyone who has read my reviews knows I try to write in an easily readable format. I try to make fair calls on ratings and realize that it is my feeling alone and only on the item I have decided to try. High class food is not a requirement. Frugality in all things has stood me well. I am fortunate to get a good quantity of views, both in photos and text. Thank you for indulging me in this prelude. Now for #120. A week and a half ago I visited McGeary's with some family before a young people's event at the Palace Theater, an icon of the city which i have also reviewed. We had various items and i decided on a standard bar food, a burger and fries. I get my burger well done so it can be hard not to cook it until it is a hockey puck. The chef did a great job and it was just the way i like it. The fries were standard fries. All in all, it was quite good. I had a beer and it was a short one and it is pleasant to me when establishments have smaller glasses available. The were no complaints from the adults and youngsters. A good time was had by all. Our waitress was Chrissy, in the photo along with Tess, the owner, holding one of the kids artworks. Christy was upbeat, friendly and worked hard to take care of our bigger group, always with style. It was fun talking to Tess, the owner, who always had a smile, also says Al, inside comment. It had been a long while since I was here, and I shall return. I hope this long narrative did not bother any readers.

Ty was great! Fabulous service, great beer options and the place had a great atmosphere. Will definitely visit again after the next show at the Palace Theater.
